This simple and small, flashy fly is designed to imitate Atlantic silversides or glass minnows. They look better in the water than the real thing! I tie them on Gamakatsu Octopus hooks, size 1/0 in this example.

Tying Sequence

Step One

Wrap the hook shank with thread as shown, and add a sparse underwing on the shank, slightly ahead of the hook point, to serve as the tail or belly. I used white bucktail in this example.

Step Two

Add a small clump of peacock Flashabou using the “double-back” method just forward of the bucktail toward the hook eye. (Ed. Note: By “double-back” method, the author means cutting a length of material at twice the length desired, then tying it in at the half-way point in the material, folding the second half over the first, and then securing the fold with thread.)

Step Three

On top of the peacock Flashabou, add a second layer of chartreuse Flashabou in front of the first using the same method.

Step Four

Add 2 or 3 strands of silver Krystal Flash in front (toward the hook eye) of the Flashabou.

Step Five

Add the sparse wing of olive bucktail. Try to keep this on top of the Flashabou body, and by now should have worked your way to the hook eye.

Step Six

Last, but not least, build the head with silver tinsel or Bill’s Body Braid. Finish off with a googly eye for rattle, or a prismatic eye just for profile and whip-finish. There you have it, Gordo’s Glass Minnow. Now, go feed some fish!
